How I use tarot when I'm "in the mud"

TL;DR (but hope you do), I’ll be opening my schedule in August for emailed + recorded tarot readings! If you want to join the list and be the first to know, you can do that here.

Hey, Reader,

Today I'm talking all about Tarot.

Let’s get a few things out of the way upfront: Tarot in and of itself is not fortune-telling, scary, or a predictor of anything. It’s a set of cards with images on them and is what you make of it.

I approach tarot in a medicinal way -sort of like an herbalist working with herbs. Each tarot card contains a different vitamin of sorts.

Tarot cards are a reflection of our experience being human, and can act as mirrors to the truth we hold inside ourselves. (learn more about my approach to tarot here)

I’ve given many tarot readings over the years and have noticed (in myself as well as clients) how strong the impulse can be to use tarot to “find things out” about other people. While that might be tempting, it’s never been in my integrity to use tarot in that way (and I personally don’t think it’s effective either).

What I have discovered, however, is that Tarot is brilliant when turning the focus inward (toward yourself).

So a question like “Why did this person do that (or what was their motivation for xyz)” becomes “What needs tending to in myself?”.

We can’t control what other people think, feel, or do, but we can influence our own thoughts, feelings and actions. So when we focus the tarot on our internal experience, it becomes infinitely more powerful.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s dive into the topic for today - tarot for tough times!

I’ve come to lean on my tarot deck as a coaching tool when I’m feeling stuck, frustrated, or in a difficult spot.

During tough times, it’s easy to focus on what will help you get “over” or “through” the hardship. Let’s face it - nobody wants discomfort. Yet, that doesn't change that it happens....a lot. In my experience, focusing too much on what’s on the other side or "up ahead" is just another form of spiritual bypassing. The real "gold" lies in embracing the shit (as Thich Nhat Hanh said, “no mud, no lotus”).

Here are the 3 questions I’ve come to rely on when I’m going through the “mud”:

  1. What do I most need in this moment?
  2. What wants (or needs) to be witnessed and acknowledged (within myself)?
  3. What will help me be with "what’s here"?

And if I’m in a super rough spot and need a speckle of hope, I like to finish with this gem:

What support can I draw in to make this (being present in a tough time) feel just a little bit more doable?

Now, do you have to have a tarot deck in order to ask (or benefit) from these questions? Nope! These questions are a starting point for deeper self-connection. Maybe they’re questions you journal about, or prompts for drawings where you let your creativity lead the way. Some people love using oracle decks because they give clear guidance without needing to learn or memorize tarot cards.

Join the waitlist here! I’ll be opening up my “books” (aka recorded tarot readings) for the month of August. It’s been a while since I’ve offered these outside of my Your Energetic Signature program and I’m excited to see what magic unfolds as I reconnect with you in this way.

Stay tuned for my next email, where I'll be sharing some of my favorite nervous system techniques for "when the mud hits".

Cheers,

Abby

Abby Beth Carter www.abbybethcarter.com Lil update If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been taking some space from social media. Life has been full - in a good way - and instead of forcing an “online presence,” I’ve been following the flow, which has led me away from posting. However, I have been thinking about my peeps (that’s you!) on my email list and want to stay connected here. So while I don’t have any mind-blowing updates or fun announcements, I thought I’d say hi and share a light email...
